| Before the introduction of the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) only the Uniform Crime Reports Arrest Statistics provided information on crimes against society. In NIBRS, this term refers to offenses for which no victim information is available because such offenses almost always lack a complaining witness other than the police officer filing the report. The victim in these cases is society at large. The offenses are (1) drug or narcotic offenses focused on drug possession, use, or sale and possession of drug equipment; (2) four types of gambling offenses; (3) pornography or obscenity; (4) prostitution or assisting in it, and (5) weapons law violations. The presenters in this session will focus on the relative number and geographic location of such offenses and the characteristics of those reported as offenders or arrestees. For drug offenses, NIBRS provides information on the types and amounts of drugs reported as well as data on offenders and arrestees. The discussant has been asked to review the papers anc omment on the common features of crimes against society, important distinctions among them, and problems of data interpretation. | |||
