| This panel presents results of analyses from fifth grade (age 10) to adulthood (age 24) examining factors affecting adolescent development and the transition to adulthood. The papers draw from ten waves of longitudinal data from 808 youths from the Seattle Social Development Project (SSDP) panel. SSDP is a theory-driven developmental study of childhood, adolescent, and adult predictors of crime, substance abuse and related health and behavior problems. The multiethnic urban panel of both males and females, constituted in 1985 when subjects entered the fifth grade in 18 elementary schools, has been interviewed eight times through 1993 (at age 18), and again in 1996 (age 21), and 1999 (age 24). We present results of analyses examining four questions: What early factors predict self-reported and official criminal career parameters? Can positive school and peer experiences moderate the impact of early family adversity on positive adult functioning? To what extent do adolescent social developmental experiences mediate or moderate the link between early characteristics and adult depression? What are the proximal predictors of partner violence and victimization in young adulthood? Together these four papers examine the ability of social developmental experiences to predict, moderate and mediate adolescent and young adult development. | |||
