| In 1997, the California Department of Corrections established the California
Substance Abuse Treatment Facility (CSATF) in Corcoran, California. With a
treatment capacity of 1,478, the CSATF is currently the largest in-prison
therapeutic community in the state, and one of the largest in the country.
The programs follow the therapeutic community model, modified for a prison
environment. Unlike many prison-based treatment programs, the majority of
inmates admitted to the program do so involuntarily. The present study
reports on at recidivism and other outcomes for CSATF participants (n=404)
and a matched non-treatment comparison group (n=404). Outcomes are based on
both official records and self-report data. Where possible both types of
data were combined to maximize detection of drug use and criminal behaviors
during the 12-month follow-up period.
