| We examine a variety of traditional assumptions about the relationship
between fear of crime and victimization in the context of a community
setting. Two East coast cities (New York, NY and Washington, DC) will be
compared to two West coast cities (Los Angeles, CA and San Diego, CA).
Data from the BJS/NCVS study of Criminal Victimization and Perceptions of Community Safety in 12 Cities (1998) will be used in a multi-variate analysis techniques are used to control for a variety of respondent attitudes and perceptions toward their neighborhood community, their city and their local police agencies. The implications of these findings are discussed with regard to previous empirical research and new theoretical directions.
