2012 Dissertation Award Recipient, Second Place (Shared)

Phil Mulvey is a doctoral candidate at Arizona State University in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice.  His research interests principally focus on the social control of marginalized populations and specifically examine individuals with mental illness who come into contact with the criminal justice system.  Phil’s dissertation, On the Brink: Experiences of Women with Mental Illness on Probation, is a year long mixed methods study of women on the Severely Mentally Ill (SMI) caseload at Maricopa County Adult Probation in Phoenix Arizona.  His study explores the lives of women with mental illness on probation, their pathways into the criminal justice system, their relationships with probation officers and the court, and aspects of social control as these women navigate both the benevolent control of the mental health system and the coercive control of the criminal justice system.  As part of the project Phil is analyzing five years worth of intake data for the SMI caseload, conducting qualitative interviews with SMI women offenders and their probation officers, and completing ten months worth of ethnographic observations at the mental health problem solving court in Maricopa County Arizona.  Phil will defend his dissertation in April of 2013.
